Early Grain Store Preparation for Harvest 2026: High pest pressures predicted

With harvest on the horizon, grain store preparation should already be firmly on the to do list. After a mild autumn and fewer prolonged cold spells over winter, pest pressures are predicted to be significantly higher this season. For UK growers, that means one thing. Early, thorough grain store cleaning and treatment is not optional. It is essential.

According to Ken Black, account manager at Envu, prolonged warm conditions have allowed grain store pests to continue breeding later into the year than usual. Historically, cold winter temperatures helped suppress insect populations ahead of harvest. Increasingly mild winters are removing that natural barrier.

Pests such as weevils and saw toothed grain beetles thrive at temperatures of 12 degrees Celsius and above. Last summer’s heat, followed by a mild autumn, created ideal breeding conditions. As a result, growers could face unseasonably high insect burdens heading into harvest 2026.

The good news is that grain store pest infestations are largely preventable. The key lies in preparation.

Why Early Grain Store Cleaning Matters

Grain quality is only as good as your preparation. If corners are cut, you risk contamination, rejected loads, financial penalties and long term damage to your reputation. In severe cases, losses caused by grain store pests can rival the impact of field diseases.

Starting grain store preparation at least two months before harvest allows time for a thorough job. It also reduces pressure during the busy harvest period, when decisions are often driven by weather windows and operational demands.

Completing cleaning and treatment early ensures that when grain arrives, the store is not already harbouring hidden insect populations ready to infest fresh crops.

The Three Step Defence: Clean, Monitor, Treat

Effective grain store pest control comes down to three interconnected stages. Cleaning alone is not enough. Monitoring alone is not enough. Treatment alone is not enough. When combined, they form a robust line of defence.

Step One: Comprehensive Cleaning

The first step is to empty absolutely everything from the store. Old grain residues, machinery, pallets and debris must be cleared to create a blank canvas.

Approach the building three dimensionally. Too often, attention focuses on the floor and lower walls while higher ledges, beams and roof and floor voids  are neglected. These elevated and forgotten  areas are typically warmer and accumulate dust, cobwebs and fine grain debris, providing perfect harbourage sites for insects.

Key areas to focus on include:

  • Floors and wall junctions
  • Ledges and structural beams
  • Roof space and cladding
  • Cracks, expansion joints and damaged concrete
  • Pits and voids
  • Under conveyors and around intake pits

Industrial vacuuming is recommended rather than sweeping alone, as this removes fine dust that can support pest development. Once cleaning is complete, inspect the structure for cracks or holes and carry out repairs immediately. Even small gaps can harbour significant insect populations.

Step Two: Monitoring Before Harvest

Once the store is thoroughly cleaned and structurally sound, monitoring should begin straight away. Insect traps should be positioned strategically and checked every seven to ten days.

Monitoring at this stage serves two purposes. First, it confirms whether cleaning has been effective. Second, it provides early warning of residual pest activity before grain enters the store.

Consistent trap checks help build a picture of pest pressure and allow informed decisions about treatment timing.

Step Three: Treating the Grain Store Fabric

According to Ross Goodman, technical accounts director at Lodi UK, a belt and braces approach offers the strongest protection.

The first treatment stage involves applying a liquid insecticide such as K-Obiol to the entire internal fabric of the building. This includes floors, walls, ledges and roof areas.

When correctly applied, K-Obiol treatments remain active on surfaces for up to two months, providing ongoing residual protection against emerging insects. Coverage must be thorough, including hard to reach areas that are commonly missed.

For an added layer of assurance, Lodi UK recommends following the liquid treatment with a smoke based application such as the Actellic Smoke Generator.

Smoke treatments penetrate cracks, crevices and inaccessible voids within the building fabric. As pests are driven out of hiding, they come into contact with treated surfaces and are eliminated.

The smoke generator should only be used after full cleaning and liquid application have taken place. The store must then remain sealed for 48 hours to ensure maximum efficacy.

This dual approach significantly reduces the likelihood of insects surviving in hidden harbourage areas.

Extra Tips to Stay Ahead of Grain Store Pests

At Lodi UK, grain store preparation is about more than just product application. It is about creating a complete protection plan.

Firstly, remove vegetation and spilled grain around the exterior of the building. External debris can act as a breeding reservoir for insects and rodents. Keeping the perimeter clean reduces reinfestation risk.

Secondly, inspect doors, vents and intake areas for gaps. Installing appropriate proofing measures helps prevent pests entering once treatment has been completed.

Thirdly, calibrate application equipment before use. Even coverage is critical to achieving the residual protection stated on product labels.

Fourthly, plan your cleaning schedule into the farm calendar early. Waiting until late spring often results in rushed preparation, particularly if weather conditions suddenly turn favourable for field work.

Finally, keep detailed records of cleaning dates, monitoring results and treatment applications. Not only does this support assurance scheme compliance, it also helps refine your strategy year on year.

Protecting Grain Quality Starts Now

With higher pest pressures predicted due to changing weather patterns, early grain store preparation for harvest 2026 must be a priority for UK growers.

Mild winters and extended breeding periods mean insects are likely entering the season in greater numbers. However, with a structured approach of cleaning, monitoring and treating, the risk of infestation can be dramatically reduced.

By starting at least two months before harvest, thoroughly cleaning every surface, monitoring consistently and applying both liquid and smoke based treatments, growers can protect their yield and their pocket, ensuring  grain quality and avoiding  costly losses.

When it comes to stored grain pest control, preparation is everything. The earlier you act, the stronger your defence.
